Centro Vasco 'Guillermo Larregui'

The Centro Vasco Guillermo Larregui of Chacabuco, founded on 15 July 1989, bears the name of the Basque with the wheelbarrow. Guillermo Larregui was living in Piedra Buena, in Santa Cruz, when in 1935, at the age of 50, he took up the challenge of walking all the way to Buenos Aires: more than 3,000 kilometres, with no company but a wheelbarrow. That is where his nickname came from, and his journey is the subject of the documentary “¡Gora Vasco!”, by Roberto Arizmendi. The centre was born under the sponsorship of the Basque centre Lagun Onak of Pergamino, and none of its members is Basque-born; it has a small dance group and organises regular trips to Euskal Herria. The Basque Government recognised it on 18 June 1996, and its register credits it with 311 members.
