Centro Basko 'Euzko Etxea'

The Centro Basko Euzko Etxea of La Plata grew out of a day of Basque culture in 1943 and is one of the six “large or traditional” centres of the FEVA. That day was organised by the Capuchin Father Casiano de Goldaraz on 21 November, the 61st anniversary of the founding of the city: mass in the Cathedral with the Lagun Onak choir, a dance festival at the Teatro Argentino and a romería (open-air festivity) at the La Navarra café. The centre was founded on 1 January 1944, under the presidency of Jesús Juan Torre, and in 1947 the members agreed to buy the premises on the corner of Calle 58 and Calle 14, which it still occupies. In 1955 it was among the founding organisations of the FEVA, on whose Board of Directors it has a guaranteed seat, and it has hosted three Semanas Nacionales Vascas (National Basque Weeks), in 1982, 2004 and 2008. It works with the Universidad Nacional de La Plata and with Eusko Ikaskuntza.
