Gernika: Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein e.V.

Gernika, Berlin's Basque-German Cultural Association, grew not out of an emigrant colony but out of the memory of the bombing of Gernika, whose name it bears. In 1997, sixty years after the bombing, Constanze Lindemann organised a symposium in Berlin to which survivors were invited, and the association grew out of it, with Helios Mendiburu as its first president. The organisation itself dates its founding to April 1998; euskalkultura.eus, to 1997. On 9 December 2009 it became the first in Germany to be recognised as a euskal etxea, and in 2014 Eusko Ikaskuntza gave it the ENE award for its work on behalf of the Basque language. It has no premises of its own: it meets in rented rooms and organises Basque classes, a Basque film festival, the Korrika and historical memory events all over the city. The register credits it with 60 members.
