Euskal Etxea - Hogar Vasco de Madrid

The Euskal Etxea-Hogar Vasco de Madrid is the latest in a series of Basque houses in the capital that begins with a Euzko-Etxea documented in 1917. It was followed by the Hogar Vasco of 1923, on the Carrera de San Jerónimo, which the war turned into a barracks for the Milicias Vascas and which closed in the early forties. Later, when the authorities did not respond to a request for a civil association, its promoters set up the Hermandad de San Miguel de Aralar on the advice of the archdiocese, and it was that brotherhood's leaders who constituted the new Hogar Vasco on 5 February 1979. The headquarters at Calle Jovellanos 3, bought by the Basque savings banks and handed over for its use, was inaugurated on 1 October 1982 with the lehendakari (president of the Basque Government) Carlos Garaikoetxea, and that year ended with 2,600 members. It took its current name in 1996, and the register lists 2,134 members today.
