Euskal Etxea - Centre Cultural

Euskal Etxea-Centre Cultural is the house that the Basques of Barcelona opened in 1979, after forty years without a Basque centre in the city. It held its first general meeting on 15 March of that year and described itself in its minutes as a cultural and non-political organisation. It had its premises on Pelai street, but low participation and internal problems led it to close in 1990, although it went on existing legally. At the end of 1993 a new board relaunched it in premises next to Santa María del Mar, and in 1994 it started again with 317 members, with Basque language classes as the most popular activity. Today it has its premises on the Placeta de Montcada; the Basque Government recognised it on 2 March 1996, and the register credits it with 366 members.
