Centro Vasco-Euskal Etxea Asociación Civil de México

The Centro Vasco de México was born in 1907 as a cooperative and, after the Spanish Civil War, it was the home of the Basque exile in the country. It was constituted before a notary by Andrés Eizaguirre, its first president, and twelve other members of the Asociación Vasca de San Ignacio de Loyola, which had been dissolved in November 1906, who wanted premises for lectures, concerts and language classes. In 1934 a dispute between the board and a group of members, a “Basque-Spanish” ideology against a “Basque-nationalist” one, split it in two, and those who left founded the Círculo Vasco Español. The Centro supported the Republic; it was there that the Delegation of the Basque Government held its lunches, its receptions and Aberri Eguna, and out of that exile came, on 1 March 1943, “Euzko Deya. La voz de los vascos en México”, which was published until 1973. Since 1972 it has had its premises on Aristóteles street, in Polanco, and the Basque Government has recognised it since 18 June 1996.
