Vascos en Puerto Rico, Inc.

Vascos en Puerto Rico, Inc. was born in San Juan in 1995 “as the result of a longing to come together” among the Basques of the island and those interested in Basque culture. The Basque Government recognised it on 18 June 1996. Its first president was Jesús Lasaga, from 1995 to 2005, and he was succeeded by Eduardo Cifuentes. In September 2007, when Juan José Ibarretxe made the first visit by a lehendakari (president of the Basque Government) to the island, the association had some eighty members, had been without premises of its own for three years and published an informal newsletter at irregular intervals, “Gure Etxea”, devoted to “the kind of news that never appears in the usual media: the positive news about Euskadi”.
