Society of Basque Studies in America

The Society of Basque Studies in America was born in 1979 in San Francisco to promote the academic study of Basque culture in the United States. It was founded by three academics: Dr Emilia Sarriugarte Doyaga, Dr Gloria Castresana Waid and Dr Juan Mendizabal. For years it published the “Journal of Basque Studies in America”, whose editing passed in 2011 to the Basque Studies programme at Boise State University, and it keeps its own Basque Hall of Fame. Today it is based in Brooklyn (New York); the Basque Government has recognised it since 1997, and its register credits it with 131 members.
