About the centre
The San Francisco Basque Club was born in 1960 next to the Basque hotels and restaurants of the North Beach neighbourhood, around Broadway and Larkin. There it had its dance, its klika and its pelota. When those facilities were torn down, a group of members founded a new organisation in 1979, the one that would end up becoming the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco, opened in 1982. The Basque Government recognised the club in 1997.
