Fresno Basque Club

The Fresno Basque Club is the Basque club of Fresno (California), founded in 1978 and a member of NABO from the following year. The community is much older: from 1927, the Basque Hotel in the Chinatown neighbourhood, opposite the railway station, served as an employment agency and boardinghouse for the Basque sheepherders arriving in California's Central Valley, and helped them find work, a doctor and lodging in the off-season of sheepherding. Today the club organises dinners and cultural events, and it has welcomed Basque groups from other countries, such as the Euskal Australiar Alkartea. The Basque Government recognised it in 1996.
