Haize Hegoa

In Montevideo, Haize Hegoa opened the second wave of Basque centres in Uruguay, the one founded by descendants rather than by emigrants. It was born in 1988 out of Eusko Indarra, a youth dance group formed in 1982, and before becoming independent it set up an ikastola within Euskal Erria. After it came the centres of the interior, starting with the one in Durazno in 1990. The Basque Government recognised it on 2 April 1996, and the register credits it with 163 members.
