Txoko Alai - Euskal Etxea of Miami, Inc.

Txoko Alai, the Euskal Etxea of Miami, grew up around jai alai and the Basque pelotaris who played or had retired in Florida. In the eighties the state had as many as eleven active frontons, and several pelotaris and former pelotaris in the area founded two organisations, Toki Ona, in 1986, and a small gastronomic txoko called Txoko Alai, which would end up merging into one. Among them was Boni Guenetxea, a native of Gernika, who was its driving spirit for decades. The Basque Government recognised it in 1997. It works largely as a gastronomic society in the Donostia-San Sebastián style, with Basque language classes and celebrations such as Aberri Eguna and San Ignacio, and in 2016, after years apart from the Basque centres of the west of the country, it joined NABO.
