The organised Basque community of Brazil is today broader than its official register. This portal’s register of centres lists 2 bodies in the country, Eusko Alkartasuna of São Paulo and the Eusko-Brasildar Etxea of Itapevi; the one in Brasilia, recognised in 2011, no longer appears on the official list, and nor does the Euskal Etxea de Rio Grande do Sul.¹¹

There is also a figure for those who live there with Basque citizenship. In 2005, 719 citizens of the Basque Autonomous Community living in Brazil were on the electoral roll.² They are Basque citizens, not descendants.

The institutional relationship has its own history too. In November 2003 Lehendakari (president of the Basque Government) Juan José Ibarretxe visited Brasilia, São Paulo and the state of Goiás, signed environmental cooperation agreements with the governments of São Paulo and Goiás and met the Basque-Brazilian community of São Paulo.²
