No organised community has survived from the exile colony: the country’s only Basque centre appears in the register, but without activity. There was none in Galíndez’s day either. “Given the small number of Basques, there is no Basque centre or association”, he wrote. Even so, a refugee from Bilbao, Pedro de las Heras, published the cultural magazine Erria for a time, and the delegation organised banquets and events with the colony.²

The Basque Government’s official register today recognises one Basque entity in the country, the Casa Vasca Euskal Etxea Inc. de Santo Domingo, recognised on 30 August 1996, almost half a century after the delegation closed.¹ Its listing on euskalkultura.eus gives it as inactive.⁴
