Today the Basques of the United Kingdom have one recognised centre and, beside it, an association that keeps the memory of 1937. The Basque Government’s official register recognises a single Basque organisation in the country, the Basque Society-Euskal Elkartea, better known as the London Basque Society.¹

According to the report of the Directorate for Relations with Basque Communities, the society had already been holding activities for some time, and in 1999 it was entered in the United Kingdom’s register of societies.⁵ The Basque Government’s register recognised it on 27 April of that same year and gives it 377 members.¹

It is based at Oxford House, on Derbyshire Street, in the Bethnal Green neighbourhood.⁷ It organises cultural events, Basque classes, a children’s club and workshops, such as one on Basque pelota.⁸

The memory of the children is kept by the Basque Children of ’37 Association UK, which brings together descendants and scholars of the 1937 expedition.⁶
